Madrid is one of the best communicated cities in the world, due to Madrid Metro has 13 conventional metro lines that have 301 stations. In addition, citizens have 3 light rail lines, a kind of tram that connects the peripheral areas of the city.

Read our article to find out more about the Madrid Metro, the many ticket options and how to get your transport card.

Types of Metro de Madrid transport card

To use the services of Madrid Metro it is necessary to have a Public Transport Card loaded with a valid transport ticket for the trip that is intended to be made.

Unlike other European capitals, in Madrid there are security and surveillance services at each of the metro entrances, being totally necessary to validate a transport ticket in each of your trips and keep it throughout the trip. It must be preserved in order to be able to make it available to any agent of the Metropolitan Railway or the inspection of the Regional Transport Consortium that may request it.

If the traveler does not have the corresponding title, he must pay a fine amounting to € 80.

Multi card

The Multi card is a multi-personal, reloadable, contactless public transport card which is valid for ten years that can be used in conjunction with different types of tickets.

Where can you get it?
The Multi card can be purchased at: Metro de Madrid and Metro Ligero ticket machines and Tobacconist’s and other authorised points of sale.

Personal card (TTP)

This is a personal, non-transferable card, which expires 10 years after its issue date and which can be used to load both personal and non-personal transport tickets. The card contains the cardholder’s name and photograph.

There are two types of personal monthly pass: Youth Pass, Youth Card for under 26 years and Normal Pass, the standard card for over 26 years.

Where can you get it?
Personal Transport Cards can be purchased online or at tobacconist’s. Complete information on conditions, forms, fees and required documents, as well as timeframes to obtain them, are available at Personal card and Personal card (TTP)

There are also Public Transport Card Management Offices where you can apply for this card and get information about it. You must visit Personal card (TTP)

** It is important to know that you cannot purchase or recharge a card on the bus, but you can use your multi or personal card recharged in advance at any Metro de Madrid automatic machine. You can also pay for your single EMT ticket (€1.50) in cash or by card inside the bus if you do not have a Public Transport Card loaded with a valid transport ticket for the trip.
